Tottenham have told Manchester United they want a fee of £100million in one up-front payment for Harry Kane this summer.
Kane is set to enter the final year of his contract in north London this summer but Spurs are determined to hold onto him and are reluctant to sell him to a domestic rival.
United meanwhile have made signing a new centre forward a priority for the end of the season with Kane thought to be Erik ten Hag’s preferred option. The club are also interested in Napoli star Victor Osimhen and Benfica’s Goncalo Ramos.
According to The Times, Tottenham have set that huge asking price in hope of deterring United from moving for the 29-year-old.
United are already wary of entering a lengthy transfer saga with Spurs and chairman Daniel Levy.
The Manchester club signed Dimitar Berbatov from Tottenham for a fee of £30.7m back in 2008, a deal that went through on the final day of the transfer window following prolonged negotiations between the two clubs.
Given the price tag, the report adds Tottenham are ‘quietly confident’ that Kane will still be their player next season and still hope he will sign a new deal with the club.
Former United midfielder Paul Scholes last week warned the club could face being ‘strung along’ by Tottenham this summer with no guarantee they will agree to sell.
‘I just don’t think Kane will move from Tottenham at this point,’ Scholes told BT Sport ahead of United’s Europa League clash against Real Betis.
‘I think its tricky business dealing with Tottenham and Daniel Levy, he could string you along right until the very end of the window and leave you with nothing.’
United spent much of last summer chasing a deal for Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong and still harbour hopes of convincing him to leave the Camp Nou.
But the Netherlands international has indicated his preference remains to stay in Spain.
When asked about a potential move to United this summer after Barcelona’s 2-1 win over Real Madrid at Camp Nou on Sunday evening, De Jong told Ziggo Sport: ‘No, I don’t think I’m going to make that step.
‘You never know, of course, but at the moment I am very happy at Barcelona.’
